Getting ready for a quick days scenery change outside Denver? We’ve got a list of our favorite day-trips outside Denver anyone can reach in under 2 hours.

Boulder:

Boulder is an easy 40-minute drive from Denver with plenty to do for the city slickers or outdoors people. The Flatirons provide plenty of bike and hiking trails, while many others love to take a swim at the Boulder Reservoir. Downtown Boulder’s Pearl Street has tons of bars, breweries (including Avery), restaurants and unique shops and boutiques.

Mount Evans Scenic Byway:

You’ll find this exciting and beautiful drive just a little under 1.5 hours outside Denver. The byway is the highest paved road in North America. It’s not only a fourteener lovers’ dream, but also a nature lovers’ destination. You’re likely to see a majestic mountain goat or bighorn sheep along the road.

Colorado Springs:

Colorado Springs is the second-largest city after Denver in Colorado. It’s a close one hour drive and has plenty to see from Garden of the Gods (which is free to the public), Pikes Peak or the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. It’s definitely an upcoming city with plenty of good eats and micro-breweries.

Rocky Mountain National Park:

A full day is needed to take in as much as possible at Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s a nature lovers dream! There are plenty of trails, lakes, glaciers and wildlife to check out. Some people prefer to drive through while others prefer the dozens of hikes. Note that dogs are not allowed outside of vehicles in the park.

Georgetown:

Georgetown is a unique small mountain town just 45 minutes outside Denver. It has the old Gold Rush feel from the 1870s featuring cool Victorian homes and historic structures. Check out the Georgetown Loop Railroad, Haunted Gold Mine tours or take a hike in the many trails off of Guanella Pass.

Hanging Lake Trail:

You’d have to get up pretty early in the morning to make this longer trip worth the drive. The drive to Glenwood Springs/Hanging Lake is about 2.5 hours outside Denver. In Glenwood Springs you’ll find plenty of hot springs where you can soak and chill as well as the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. Hanging Lake is about a one=mile hike with gorgeous views. Make sure you read the new rules, there have been rumors about a lottery to visit.
